“Doubts about the notion of reality”

15.12.13−1.2.14

Greusslich Contemporary is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Bettina Hutschek. Hutschek is presenting an installation with a new video work and a series of porcelain figurines, which gives a new interpretation of a Breton legend by shifting the narrative perspective away from the traditional Christian-masculine version. Thus, Hutschek poetically offers a new view of the legend “La ville d’Ys / The city of Ys” (ger./engl.), which shows the change from Paganism to Christianity, thus representing a fight between two ideologies. Like in many of her works, Bettina Hutschek challenges the content of existing versions of knowledge transfer and encourages the questioning of seemingly obvious contexts and existing theories.

The legend tells the story of the city of Ys, which was flooded by God as punishment for its sinful behavior. A woman was supposedly responsible for these sins and the subsequent natural disaster; only with Bettina Hutschek, she gets her own voice. Additionally, Hutschek has re-interpreted some porcelain figurines in a painterly way to make them protagonists of her “new” story; their shapes stem from the repertoire of the porcelain manufacture Henriot Quimper, (Quimper/ France), where the legend is located.

In the side room, Bettina Hutschek’s latest typewriter drawings are being presented. They give a good insight into her omnipresent poetic approach. The serie can be approached at the end)

The fictitious documentary “City of Kroy” (engl./ger.) (2012) is shown on a monitor. It tells the story of a city whose memories materialize in form of dust. The film consists of documentary takes, interviews, performances and interventions in urban space and the poetical narration of a voice-over. Based onto the post-9/11-reality of New York, “City of Kroy” procreates a parallel world where collective memories, facts, daily actions and mythical structures merge.
